French police have confirmed that the suspected mastermind of Paris attacks that took place across Paris on November 13 2015 and left 129 people dead and several others injured has been killed after a raid at a compound in Saint Denis where he was reported to be hiding.
Although Abdelhamid Abaaoud was known to French security and intellegience, at the time of the attacks, it was assumed that he was in Syria when in fact he was in France. bdelhamid Abaaoud is believed to have very close ties with the leadership of the Islamic State (IS) in Syria and has been in touch with its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
Eight people were arrested and at least two killed in the raid on the property in Saint Denis. Heavily armed police stormed the building after a tip-off that Abaaoud was in Paris.
French media have also reported that a woman believed to be Abdelhamid Abaaoud’s cousin who was at the flat during the raids activated a suicide vest and killed herself.
The BBC reports that French prosecutor’s office said it was still unclear whether Abaaoud had blown himself up or not. The 28-year-old was identified from his fingerprints.
