Zanzibar to Hold Presidential Election Rerun on March 20

Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous archipelago in a union government with mainland Tanzania, will hold a re-run of presidential elections on March 20 after the results of the first vote were nullified following allegations of irregularities.

The election authority invalidated the results of the Oct. 25 election in Zanzibar, citing violations in the electoral laws, after the opposition Civic United Front declared its candidate the winner even before the official results were confirmed.
“We are 100 percent prepared to conduct the election,” said Salum Kassim, a director for the Zanzibar election commission, said by phone on Friday.

Zanzibar has its own parliament and leader, separate from Tanzania.
